The M23 rebel group, backed by Rwanda, has decided to put humanity first and declare a ceasefire after the rebels took over Goma, an eastern city in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Hundreds of people have been displaced since the fighting started in Goma, a region filled with mineral resources, before a ceasefire was announced on Monday by the Congolese government.
On Monday, U.N. spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric provided an update on the situation in Congo, expressing concern over rising health risks.
According to a UN refugee agency report, since the beginning of the fighting in 2022, over 400,000 people have become homeless, with 900 dead and 2,880 wounded, as G7 nations and the EU condemned the actions of Rwanda as an infringement.
However, following the announcement from the M23 rebels, there has been no immediate response from the Congolese government.
