To address the shortage of medical personnel in Nigeria’s correctional centres, the Federal Government has ordered the employment of doctors and nurses to meet the needs of these inmates across the country.

In a statement signed by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, approval for the employment of 50 medical doctors and 100 nurses was given on Thursday.

It also states that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) can now post medical doctors’ corps members to correctional centres for their one-year compulsory service.

Furthermore, the retirement age for medical personnel under the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCos) has been extended to cover the shortfalls.
