The Nigerian government has expelled Alex Barber, an American footballer turned missionary, from the country for what is being described as a statement inciting tensions in the North Central region.
The missionary, working with an NGO in America, gained popularity for his humanitarian services in the Yelewata community after the deadly attack in Plateau State, where he was building homes for affected victims.
Controversies began to trail Alex due to his comments, which could trigger tension in the area; therefore, he should be expelled from Nigeria.
Speaking on TVC, Abiodun Essiet, the Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Community Engagement (North Central), confirmed the development.
“Yeah, so we’ve realized what Alex Barber has done, so I must inform you that Alex Barber is no longer in Nigeria,” she said.
“He has been, we can say, removed and sent out of the country because of the work he’s doing, which is creating division.”
“Immediately after he made his speech in Jos, many people didn’t know that two individuals, both Muslims, were killed right after his speech.
“Because of the impact of this provocative speech, which he has been giving, he was sent out of the country and is no longer in Nigeria.”
