Cruella is an upcoming American crime comedy film based on the character Cruella de Vil.

Cruella de Vil first appeared onscreen in the 1961 Disney Animated Classic One Hundred and One Dalmatians (an adaptation of Dodie Smith’s 1956 novel, The Hundred and One Dalmations) as the antagonist dead-set on capturing a horde of Dalmatian puppies and turning them into a fur coat. The character made a reappearance in 1996’s live-action adaptation, 101 Dalmatians.

Cruella is set in 1970s London. Stone plays the soon-to-be-villain in an origin story of sorts. She’s an aspiring punk designer — and a grifter — who is trying to get society’s wealthiest people to take notice of her and her designs. Throughout the process, she becomes the infamous Cruella de Vil. The way Stone is playing the villain also has hints of Joker and Harley Quinn, leaning into the “madness” of the character and upping the dramatics of it all.

Emma Stone stars as the titular character, with Emma Thompson, Joel Fry, Paul Walter Hauser, Emily Beecham, and Mark Strong in supporting roles. Stone and Glenn Close, who played Cruella in the 1996 live-action remake and its sequel, also serve as executive producers on the film.

Cruella is scheduled to be theatrically released in the United States on May 28, 2021.
