The case of a gynecologist, Miriam Ugochi Emenike, practicing and conducting illegal procedures in Umuahia, Abia State capital, has sparked outrage among medical professionals and the general public, calling for stricter regulatory policies in the health sector.
Dr. Emenike was arraigned before a Federal High Court in Abuja for posing as a medical doctor at FMC Umuahia and a private hospital, Echoes of God’s Mercy and Grace Mission Specialist Hospital.
It was alleged that Emenike, who was employed as the Medical Director in September 2023, cannot use proper medical terminology, administered medications that led to a miscarriage for one patient and the death of another, and exhibited some inconsistencies in her documentation.
One source allegedly revealed that during one of the procedures, Dr. Emenike injected scent leaves into patients, claiming it was part of the IVF process for cleaning the uterus.
With the various inconsistencies in her practices and medical career, a petition was written to the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, where it was noted that Emenike’s name was not found among the licensed medical practitioners, and the folio number she uses belongs to another doctor.
The case has been adjourned to March 10, 2025, where victims and medical professionals will testify against her.
