The Federal Government is set to make a formal reconciliation declaration regarding the 1967 Asaba Massacre, 59 years after hundreds of civilians were killed during the Nigerian Civil War.

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, disclosed this on Wednesday during the annual memorial service held in Asaba to honor the victims of the historical tragedy.

Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Kingsley Emu, Governor Oborevwori stated that formal acknowledgment by the Federal Government remains vital to achieving genuine national healing and reconciliation.

He noted that while the Delta State Government has already recognized the tragedy, a national declaration and a fitting federal memorial are essential steps toward honoring the victims. The governor added that remembering the incident is not an act against the nation, but a necessary process for national unity and historical justice.
