Following the verification of civil servants in Abia State on supposedly ghost workers, over 200 million naira have been saved by the state government on monthly wage bills.

According to a statement made by Deaconess Njum Onyemenam, the State Accountant General, through Kazie Uko, Chief Press Secretary to the governor, they were able to make such saving with a unified payment system.

This information was disclosed by the State Accountant on Monday after meeting with Dr. Alex Otti. She stated that more savings will be made in the ongoing verification scheme.

Onyemenam said the government has saved N220 million from the ongoing verification exercise of workers both in the local government and pensioners in the State.

“Not less than 2,300 ghost names have been weeded out of the payrolls, using the unified payment system and we hope to still identify more as we continue with the exercise,” she said.

She further added that with the instructions of Governor Otti, payment of April arrears alongside the June pension for retirees under the past administration had been paid last week.

In conclusion, she said those workers from the Local government who skipped the June salaries payment because they failed to submit their verified payment schedule, will receive their salaries this week.
