The Delta State Government has announced a reduction of its inherited legacy debt by approximately ₦400 billion, reducing the outstanding financial obligation from ₦463 billion down to ₦63 billion under the administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

The Commissioner for Economic Planning, Mr. Sonny Ekedayen, disclosed the figures in Asaba during the 2026 Budget Stakeholders’ Engagement, where he outlined the state’s fiscal position ahead of the 2027 budget cycle.

Ekedayen attributed the reduction to strict financial discipline, fiscal restructuring, and prudent resource management implemented since the administration assumed office in May 2023.

He further revealed that the state government has targeted the complete clearance of the remaining ₦63 billion balance within the first quarter of 2027 to free up revenue for ongoing infrastructure and socio-economic programs.
