The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has flagged 268 records in its preliminary Register of Voters over suspected artificial intelligence-generated photographs and biometric irregularities as part of nationwide cleanup efforts ahead of the 2027 general elections.
INEC’s Director of Information and Communication Technology, Lawrence Bayode, disclosed the development on Sunday during a television interview, confirming that the commission’s Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) identified the suspicious profiles during automated audits.
Bayode explained that fraud detection algorithms caught individuals attempting to exploit specialized registration protocols—originally designed to accommodate persons with disabilities (PWDs) missing fingers—to bypass standard fingerprint capturing and establish invalid voter profiles.
The commission emphasized that all flagged records have been quarantined for manual verification, warning that individuals found guilty of intent to manipulate the voter database will face prosecution under provisions of the Electoral Act.
