The Federal Government has dismissed allegations that it is pressuring the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to postpone the January 16 2027 presidential election, labeling the claims as false.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, clarified the government’s position following claims made by the African Democratic Congress Presidential Campaign Council (ADC-PCC). The opposition campaign council had warned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu against altering the electoral calendar or attempting to evade an electoral verdict.

Rebuffing the assertion, Idris stated that the administration is entirely unaware of any move to adjust the election timetable, emphasizing that the electoral schedule remains intact as determined by the independent commission.

”The Federal Government is not planning to shift the date of the election or postpone any election,” Idris said. “This is not in the works; the Federal Government is unaware of this, and this is just fake news as far as we are concerned.”
