About 20 people sustained varying degrees of injury while over 50 houses were destroyed following a massive gas pipeline explosion in the Aleto community, Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The incident occurred on Thursday around 5:00 p.m. along the Old Bori Road, following an alleged rupture on a facility belonging to the Nigeria Gas Company (NGC).
Local residents reported that the pipeline had been leaking continuously for roughly three weeks prior to the blast, creating severe safety risks before eventually igniting.
Speaking to journalists, the leader of the Eleme Legislative Council, Hon. Daniel Chuma, confirmed that official letters had been dispatched to the operating firm warning of the leak, alongside formal petitions to relevant regulatory authorities, but no remedial action was taken prior to the explosion.
