The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has counselled, treated, and rehabilitated 53,843 individuals struggling with substance abuse across its 31 rehabilitation facilities nationwide over the past five years.

The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the agency, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), made the disclosure on Friday at the 4th Vanguard Mental Health Summit held in Lagos.

Represented by the Director of Seaport Operations, Assistant Comptroller-General Archie-Abia Ibinabo, Marwa highlighted that the agency also conducted 17,213 preventative outreaches under its War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) initiative within the same period to enhance public awareness.

Marwa emphasized the intrinsic link between substance abuse and mental health conditions, warning that treating one issue without addressing the other severely limits recovery support for affected youth. He added that the agency will continue expanding its preventative and rehabilitation infrastructure to tackle addiction across the country.
