Festus Keyamo Urges Media Neutrality Following Blockade of Peter Obi in Benue

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has called on the media to eliminate partisan bias when reporting political conflicts, following the recent obstruction of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in Benue State. Keyamo condemned the disruption, emphasizing that political leaders of all affiliations must be granted unhindered freedom of movement to engage communities without fear of harassment or violence.

The incident occurred when a crowd of youths barricaded a major road in Makurdi, preventing Obi’s convoy from traveling to Yelwata in the Guma Local Government Area. Obi had intended to visit the community to offer condolences to families impacted by a violent attack in June 2025.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Keyamo stressed that acts of political intimidation must be denounced universally, regardless of which party or faction is involved. He argued that media coverage and public commentary should focus on defending democratic rights rather than framing every security incident through a partisan lens.

Keyamo noted that the root cause of the protest—whether stemming from internal NDC disputes, as claimed by the Benue State Government, or alleged external sponsorship by rival political parties—does not excuse the restriction of a public figure’s movement. He rejected assertions that the potentially political nature of Obi’s visit justified blocking access to the community.

“Politicians must be allowed to move freely and campaign without intimidation or violence,” Keyamo stated, reiterating that fundamental democratic principles must apply equally across the political spectrum. He urged journalists and media organizations to maintain objectivity and avoid fueling political divisions when reporting on electoral frictions.

The minister’s intervention highlights growing national concern over political intolerance and electioneering security as parties prepare for upcoming electoral contests. By calling for balanced media reporting and absolute freedom of movement, Keyamo’s statement reinforces the need for civil political engagement ahead of future elections.
