The 2026 action thriller Runner is set to bring audiences a fast-paced story of survival, sacrifice and determination when it arrives in cinemas on September 11, 2026.

Directed by Scott Waugh, the filmmaker behind action-driven productions such as “Need for Speed” and “The Expendables 4”, Runner stars Alan Ritchson and Owen Wilson in a story that combines intense action, suspense and moments of unexpected humor.

With a running time of approximately 97 minutes, the film is rated PG-13 and blends action, mystery, thriller and comedy elements.

Alan Ritchson Takes the Lead

Alan Ritchson takes on the central role of Hank Malone, bringing the physicality and intensity expected from a former soldier caught in extraordinary circumstances.

Ritchson has increasingly become associated with action-oriented roles, particularly following his work as Jack Reacher in the television series Reacher. In Runner, that physical presence is once again placed at the centre of the story.

Opposite him is Owen Wilson as Ben Bishop.

Wilson’s involvement adds a different dimension to the film. Best known for his work in comedy, drama and mainstream action films, Wilson brings his characteristic comic timing to a story otherwise dominated by danger and violence.

The contrast between Ritchson’s action-heavy character and Wilson’s more unconventional presence is expected to provide some of the film’s lighter moments while the two characters attempt to survive the mission.

The cast also includes Rodrigo Santoro, Leila George, Peta Sergeant, Geraldine Hakewill, Kate Box and other performers.

Release and Audience Expectations

Runner is scheduled to open in U.S. cinemas on September 11, 2026, through Angel Studios. It carries a PG-13 rating for strong violence, bloody images and some language.

The film’s official running time is 1 hour and 37 minutes, giving audiences a relatively compact action experience rather than an extended blockbuster-length production.

The movie has already generated interest among action-film audiences, particularly because of the combination of Ritchson’s action credentials, Wilson’s star appeal and Waugh’s experience directing large-scale action

What Makes Runner Worth Watching?

For audiences looking for a straightforward action film built around urgency and survival, Runner offers a familiar but potentially entertaining formula.

It has several ingredients associated with the genre:

  • A former soldier with a dangerous past
  • An unlikely partnership
  • A life-or-death medical mission
  • A ruthless cartel
  • A race against time
  • High-speed pursuit sequences
  • Gun battles and physical confrontations
  • Comedy woven into the action
  • A child whose survival depends on the heroes’ success

At its core, however, Runner is about the lengths people are willing to go to save another person’s life.

Final Thoughts

With Alan Ritchson leading the cast, Owen Wilson providing an unexpected comedic counterbalance and Scott Waugh directing, Runner enters the 2026 movie calendar as a film aimed squarely at fans of fast-moving action thrillers.

Its story is built around a simple but effective premise: a critical medical delivery must reach its destination, but the people responsible for getting it there are being hunted.

That combination of time pressure, danger, sacrifice and unlikely partnership gives Runner the potential to deliver an entertaining cinematic experience.

Whether it ultimately rises above the conventions of the modern action-thriller remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: when the race begins, stopping is not an option.

The film was written by Miles Hubley and Tommy White, with Hubley also credited as a writer on the official film information.

The production brings together a number of producers, including Mark Fasano, Todd Garner, Deborah Glover, Jeffrey Greenstein and Alan Ritchson.

Runner opens in U.S. cinemas on September 11, 2026.
