Delta State Constructs Pioneer Neuropsychiatric Hospital and Public Health Lab

The Delta State Government has officially commenced construction on its first dedicated neuropsychiatric facility alongside a specialized public health laboratory, with both projects scheduled for completion by March 2027.

The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, disclosed the development following a comprehensive needs assessment conducted after Governor Sheriff Oborevwori assumed office in 2023. The evaluation exposed critical gaps in the state’s public healthcare infrastructure, specifically a lack of specialized mental health services and high-tier diagnostic facilities.

Historically, patients requiring specialized psychiatric care or advanced disease analysis were forced to travel to neighboring cities like Benin and Port Harcourt. This reliance on external facilities regularly caused diagnostic delays, increased travel expenses, and placed heavy logistical strain on families.

Key Project Features & Operational Impact

• Neuropsychiatric Hospital: Designed to deliver localized, specialized mental health treatment and address growing challenges related to substance abuse, reducing the need for inter-state travel.

• Public Health Laboratory: Built to Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) standards and equipped with Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) machines.

• Local Disease Testing: Enables in-state processing of complex samples for infectious diseases such as Lassa fever, eliminating previous delays caused by sending samples to external centers in Irrua, Lagos, or Abuja.

Dr. Onojaeme emphasized that bringing these facilities to Delta State will significantly shorten diagnostic response times during public health emergencies and ensure residents receive accessible, high-quality medical care close to home.
