Presidential Pardon: Nigerians Blow Hot

Post created on 1:17 pm

President Bola Tinubu has come under fire from opposition parties and individuals on social media over the presidential pardon granted to convicts, including alleged drug lords and murderers.

‎The presidency released a detailed list on Saturday of 175 individuals granted presidential pardon in 2025. Among them are late nationalist Herbert Macaulay, the late Major General Mamman Vatsa, and Maryam Sanda, who was sentenced to death for killing her husband.

‎Sending a strong voice of condemnation, Atiku Abubakar,  the ADC, and others described the act as a grave setback for the nation in all areas, especially concerning justice.

‎Alledgedly, Tinubu has made history as the first president to grant presidential pardon to individuals convicted of drug offenses, homicide, fraud, and illegal mining.

‎The criticism keeps rising as debates are ongoing about whether this practice will transcend generations, but the President claimed to base his pardon on old age, the acquisition of new vocational skills, or enrollment in the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).
