Fake Lawyer Arrested in Udu Court

Lawyers are calling for stricter measures in the Nigerian judicial system to cut down on those parading themselves as certified lawyers but who have never had any formal training in the field, as was the case at Orhuwhorun Magistrate Court in Udu on Thursday.
The fake lawyer, identified as U. T. Oghenetejiri, raised suspicions in the courtroom when he was unable to answer some questions from the Magistrate.
Oghenetejiri, noticing that time was running out for him, immediately took to his heels but was chased and apprehended by members of the Nigerian Bar Association, Udu Branch.
Relating the case to journalists in Warri, the Chairman of the NBA Udu Branch, Edmund Odohisi, said the fake lawyer was trying to represent a client’s criminal matter before the whole issue came to light, and he was chased to Orhuwhorun market by lawyers and court staff.
Oghenetejiri, in his usual way, had been frequenting courts in the area for months, representing clients under false pretenses. However, luck ran out for him on Thursday when he could not provide credible information about his law school and showed inconsistency in his legal arguments.
The fake lawyer has been handed over to the Ovwian Police Station for further investigation and possible arraignment.
