“If somebody is doing runs, girls go and look for men to sleep with; you know that’s a service, and they will pay tax on it. Because tax law does not separate between whether your work is legit or not; it only asks if you have an income”.
These were the words of the Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, Taiwo Oyedele, in a video that has gone viral.
Speaking at the Redeemed Christian Church of God, City of David, Lagos, where he was educating the people about tax reforms, he said when income is earned from rendering a service or providing one, then an individual is entitled to pay tax.
It was recalled that the Federal Government has said that from January 1, 2026, all income earners in Nigeria will be taxable under the law, but Oyedele explained that upkeep money sent to dependants or relatives is not taxable, as such transfers are non-exchange transactions.
