The National Assembly has secured official approvals from 28 State Houses of Assembly for the proposed constitutional amendment bill seeking to establish state police services across Nigeria.

The threshold surpasses the constitutionally mandated requirement of two-thirds of the nation’s 36 state legislatures (24 states), paving the way for the transmission of the landmark legislation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for executive assent.

The Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, confirmed the milestone in a statement on Tuesday, stating that the formal resolution reports, alongside respective votes and proceedings from the 28 state assemblies, have been fully audited and verified.

The bill, titled the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Sixth Alteration) Bill, was formally transmitted to the 36 state legislatures on September 16, 2026, as part of legislative reforms to decentralize national security operations and enhance localized policing.
