Former Vice-President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has criticized President Bola Tinubu’s Independence Day address, declaring that abstract economic growth statistics offer no relief to millions of Nigerians struggling with rising living costs.

Reacting on Thursday to the President’s nationwide broadcast marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary, Atiku stated that the past three years of the current administration have subjected households to a severe cost-of-living crisis. He noted that families across the country continue to face mounting difficulties in affording basic necessities, including food, healthcare, transportation, and education.

In his anniversary address, President Tinubu defended his administration’s economic direction, asserting that Nigeria’s economic outlook had improved after three and a half years in office, supported by GDP growth exceeding four per cent, declining inflation rates, and stabilized foreign exchange operations.

Rejecting the President’s assertion that the country has entered an age of prosperity, Atiku challenged the administration to reconcile its economic claims with the daily financial pressures experienced by citizens nationwide.

The opposition leader stated that macroeconomic indicators mean little when everyday survival remains a primary challenge, calling on the government to focus on practical measures that directly ease economic burdens for ordinary Nigerians.
