FG Declares Thursday, October 1 Public Holiday for 66th Independence Anniversary

The Federal Government has declared Thursday, October 1, 2026, as a public holiday across the nation to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.

​The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government in an official statement released on Wednesday. The statement was signed by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.

​In his address, Tunji-Ojo congratulated Nigerians both at home and in the diaspora on attaining another milestone in the nation’s political history.

​He urged citizens to use the occasion to reflect on the country’s journey and actively demonstrate values that promote national growth and stability.​

“Nigerians should use this occasion to demonstrate unity, patriotism, peaceful coexistence, and mutual respect,” the Minister stated, highlighting the importance of togetherness across religious and ethnic lines.
