NDC Plans Public Crowdfunding for 2027 Campaigns

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced plans to finance its 2027 political campaigns through micro-donations from ordinary citizens, aiming to curb the influence of wealthy elites in Nigeria’s electoral process.

Speaking on Arise News’ Prime Time on Wednesday, NDC National Leader and Bayelsa West Senator, Seriake Dickson, revealed that the party will open a public crowdfunding platform allowing supporters to donate sums as small as ₦1,000.

Dickson described the NDC as Nigeria’s sole political organization operating entirely without state treasury funding. He argued that breaking away from heavy corporate and government-backed sponsorship is essential to establishing true political independence and protecting voters from systemic political oppression.

“You cannot allow your democracy to be funded by moneybags and billionaires who are now trillionaires using government resources. You will continue to be oppressed,” Dickson stated during the broadcast. “We have got to help Nigerian poor people, oppressed people, break loose from the oppressors.”

The former Bayelsa State governor emphasized that small-dollar political donations mirror international political fundraising standards, enabling working-class citizens to hold candidates accountable. By shifting its financial base to everyday voters, the NDC seeks to challenge traditional political financing structures in Nigeria, where massive wealth often dictates party nominations and campaign outcomes ahead of major elections.
