Bauchi Senator Shehu Buba Denies fresh Banditry Allegations

Senator Shehu Buba, representing Bauchi South Senatorial District, has strongly rejected renewed allegations attempting to link him to banditry in northern Nigeria. Buba dismissed viral social media videos and accompanying claims as a coordinated campaign of character assassination, maintaining that the accusations are completely groundless and fabricated.

The renewed controversy gained traction following videos posted by popular content creator ‘D English Alhaji.’ In the clips, an interviewee identified as Hassan claimed that individuals associated with suspected bandit leaders had visited the senator’s private residence. Hassan further alleged that associates connected to notorious bandit kingpin Dogo Gide were brought to Abuja for specialized training through an aide affiliated with the lawmaker.

Addressing the allegations directly, Senator Buba released an official statement titled “Setting the Record Straight: My Response to Fabricated Videos, False Allegations and a Sustained Campaign of Disinformation.” The lawmaker, who previously chaired the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence, categorically denied any association with criminal networks, insisting that political opponents are orchestrating the narrative to damage his reputation.

This latest episode represents a continuation of scrutiny surrounding Buba, who has faced similar recurring claims since 2024. Throughout these political headwinds, the lawmaker has consistently maintained his innocence, attributing the accusations to political mudslinging aimed at undermining his standing in Bauchi State and at the national level.

Security analysts note that social media influencers and citizen journalists increasingly shape public debate around Nigeria’s security challenges. However, the viral nature of unverified commentary often complicates formal investigative processes and intensifies political rivalries in sensitive regions affected by insurgency and banditry.

As public interest in the controversy grows, Buba reiterated his commitment to serving his constituency and supporting state security initiatives, calling on the public and relevant security agencies to disregard targeted smear campaigns designed to mislead citizens.
