No More Mother Tongue In Class—FG

Post created on 12:10 pm

The National Language Policy of 2022 that allows the school curriculum to teach students in their mother tongue has been abolished by the Federal Government.

Early childhood to Primary Six has been taught in the school’s community languages or mother tongue, but the inconsistency of students excelling in their grades was the reason for the reversal.

Speaking about the development on Wednesday in Abuja, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, said henceforth, from early childhood to tertiary institutions, English will now be the language of instruction in schools.

Alausa’s speech was at the opening of the Language in Education International Conference 2025, organized by the British Council, noting that students have poor performance in public examinations because they were taught in their mother tongue, which has gravely affected the educational system.
