Simon Ekpa has been sentenced to six years in prison for terrorism-related crimes and other offenses by a District Court in Finland on Monday.
Following his conviction, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has distanced itself and the ESN from Ekpa, who calls himself the leader of the Biafra Government in Exile.
According to the spokesperson of IPOB, Emma Powerful, Nnamdi Kanu has no ties with Ekpa, and the Nigerian government should not use this as a means to compromise Kanu’s case.
The statement says Ekpa created his own Biafra Liberation Army, and IPOB has since distanced itself; therefore, it called on international bodies to see the peaceful leader of IPOB released as a free man.
