The House of Assembly in Benue State has been plunged into crisis for a few months now, which has led to the resignation of the Speaker, Aondoana Dajoh.
On Friday, Dajoh suspended four of the lawmakers from the assembly over an alleged impeachment plan against him.
However, following the Speaker’s resignation, an emergency meeting was convened on Sunday, and Alfred Berger, one of the suspended lawmakers representing Makurdi North State constituency, was elected as the new Speaker.
The sitting was presided over by Lami Danladi, the deputy speaker, and Berger was nominated by Douglas Akya from Makurdi South and seconded by Abu Umoru from Apa State constituency.
The state governor, Hyacinth Alia, has distanced himself from the controversy, stating that he had no role in the alleged plot to remove Dajoh as Speaker.
