Uthe Ogbimi, national U-19 male cricket coach has urged Nigeria’s women team to remain mentally focused ahead of the  International Cricket Council T-20 World Cup qualifier in Botswana.

Ogbimi told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Gaborone that he believed that the mental state of the team would determine how far it would go in the competition, which begins on Thursday.

“Competitions like this are usually a case of who will win the `nervy’ battles.

“There are matches where a team needs a little edge over its opponent and only the mental state of the team can help it to succeed.

“So, the mental state of our team is essential to determine how far it will go.

“There are some strong sides like Zimbabwe, Namibia and Uganda, but there are others like Rwanda that are about the same standard like Nigeria,’’ Ogbimi said.

The ace cricketer in his active years said he expected the team to be more competitive following its level of preparation ahead of the event.

“Considering the template for their preparation, I expect them to be more competitive this time around; be more positive, especially with regards to batting.

“I believe that they will be more mobile while `fielding’ because they have undergone really rigorous training schedule with their coaches.

“They will take their catches and obviously run in harder than they did at the Kwibuka tournament in Kigali in June,’’ he added.

Only one team is expected to qualify from the 11-nation regional qualifier.
